1937 R23 Big Little Book Series Collection (84 Different)

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $6,380.00

Collection of eighty-four different 1937 R23 "Big Little Book Series" trading cards: 20 grade Ex, 11 Vg-Ex/Ex, 21 Vg-Ex, 19 Vg, 12 Gd, and 1 Fr. Seven different characters are featured in 32-card subsets in this rare 1930s issue. The collection includes the following cards organized by character subsets: 1) Dick Tracy (25 cards): #33, 35-52, 54-56, 60, 63, and 64. (5 cards grade Ex, 7 Vg-Ex/Ex, 3 Vg-Ex, 1 Vg, 1 Fr). 2) Popeye (8 cards): #66, 67, 69-72, 87, and 88. (4 cards grade Vg-Ex, 3 Vg, 1 Gd). 3) Tom Mix (10 cards): #97-104, 107, 110, and 112. (2 cards grade Vg-Ex, 4 Vg, 4 Gd). 4) G-Man (26 cards): #129-146, 149, 151, 153-156, 159, and 160. (5 cards grade Ex, 1 Vg-Ex/Ex, 8 Vg-Ex, 8 Vg, 4 Gd). 5) Dan Dunn (15 cards): #197, 199, 211-223. (2 cards grade Ex, 3 Vg-Ex/Ex, 4 Vg-Ex, 3 Vg, and 3 Gd). Cards graded Vg-Ex and Vg-Ex/Ex are all very attractive, clean, and (for this series) reasonably high-grade cards, with no creases, which have been technically downgraded from Excellent due to mostly very light corner wear. The corners of Big Little Book Series cards are notoriously susceptible to wear. Corner wear is a common characteristic of surviving cards, both due to the stock on which the cards are printed, and their original method of issue in perforated uncut strips which had to be separated by hand. The reverse of each card features an elaborate "chapter" of the story each card subset tells. Each card bears the "Copyright 1937, by Silverbuck, Inc.," and promotes the sale of "Big Little Books." While it is certain that there are a total of 224 cards in the set, we have never seen or heard of the assembly of a complete set, and it is possible that a complete set has never been assembled. When The Sport Americana Price Guide to Non-Sports Cards was last published in 1993, many cards in the set had still not been located to list the captions for each card in the set checklist. The "Big Little Book Series" cards are among the rarest and most desirable of all 1930s trading cards, and are rarely found in such a large group. Total 84 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $6,380.00
