Circa 1930 Charlie Chaplin Card Sets From Spain (3)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $232.00
Charlie Chaplin, silent cinema's hapless darling of the 1920s, was a figure of international renown. In Spain, he was celebrated by three trading card productions which are represented in this collection. We have never before seen any cards from these rare issues, which date from the late 1920s and 1930s: 1) "Vientequatro Peliculas de Charlot" complete set (25 cards): Numbered 1-25, these cards are each designed in the style of six-cell color comics. Extremely colorful and amusing, the backs feature printed text and an ink stamped advertisement for a movie theater. Cards measure 2.5 x 3.75 inches. Overall in Vg-Ex condition. 2) "Tiempos Modernos" ("Modern Times") complete set (40 cards): Numbered 1-40, cards feature green-tinted photos with captions serializing the comic's misadventures in labor, law, and with pretty ladies, from the 1936 movie "Modern Times." Text on reverse. Each measures 2.75 x 3.75 inches. Most (36) cards Vg-Ex, 4 in lesser grades. 3) "Charlot en 'El Circo'" ("The Circus") complete set (42 cards): Serialized color cartoon card series featuring Charlie's brush with the glitter of the "Big Top" in this 1928 film. Very attractive set with colorful circus scenes. Text on reverses. Each measures 2.5 x 4.25 inches. Vg-Ex condition. Also included with the lot are eleven additional similar cards from Spain issued by a chocolate company which feature the adventures of Felix the Cat (Gd condition). All of these cards are printed on relatively thin stock, and while collectors in Spain may be familiar with these issues, we have never before seen these unusual card issues. Total 118 cards (3 complete sets plus 11 extra cards). Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $232.00
