1935 R41 Dick Tracy Caramels Complete Set (144) Plus Wrapper

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,320.00

Complete 144-card set of "Dick Tracy Caramels" issued in 1935 by the Walter H. Johnson Company of Chicago, Illinois, featuring the bright and extremely colorful artwork of Chester Gould. The set follows the adventures of Dick Tracy as he battles various criminals and villains. Dick Tracy Caramel cards are very scarce. A large hoard of cards numbered 121-144, which were discovered in the 1980s (all of which are in Mint condition and which many collectors have questions about regarding authenticity) sometimes gives collectors the incorrect impression that cards from this set are readily available. This is, in fact, the first complete 144-card set of "Dick Tracy Caramels" we have ever offered. The set grades 90% Vg-Ex, 10% range from G to Vg (mostly Vg). The cards numbered 121-144 in this set are definitely original issue cards issued from 1935. The assembly of this set predates the discovery of the Mint quantities of those twenty-four cards by decades. The entire set is in remarkably consistent overall Very Good to Excellent condition. With the exception of five or six cards which each have a light crease, all cards are free of creases, and have been downgraded almost exclusively due to corner wear. This is a very attractive and rarely offered complete set of one of the 1930s most noteworthy and underestimated non-sport card sets. Accompanying the set is what at first glance appears to be an original pack of Dick Tracy caramels; however, close examination reveals that the pack is not sealed. It is clear that there are a couple of Dick Tracy cards and what appears to be gum or candy in the pack, but we believe the contents have been added long ago strictly for display purposes. At the very least, this pack represents a magnificent example in Excellent condition of the extremely rare and attractive Dick Tracy Caramel wrapper. Also accompanying the set is an additional extremely rare Schutter Candy Company "Dick Tracy Candy Bar" wrapper (7 x 5.5 inches) featuring a portrait of Dick Tracy (one inch tear at left margin professionally repaired, otherwise in Excellent condition). Total 146 items (144 cards, one pack, and one wrapper). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
