Luis Royo Famous Original Painting The Roofs of Fear
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,640.00
Luis Royo is perhaps the most highly regarded pinup/fantasy artist of the past twenty years. He is world renowned as the master of this genre, and he is the single most published cover artist in the history of Heavy Metal magazine. Royo, more than any other artist, is credited with defining the look of Heavy Metal magazine, and influencing the world of modern fantasy and pinup art. Royo's artwork has graced the covers of hundreds of magazines and books, and his work has been collected in a best-selling series of books devoted to his work. He is a rarity in the world of illustration art in that his popularity is literally worldwide. It is almost incredible that his work is virtually nonexistent in the marketplace. It is possible that Royo originals simply never make it out of Europe, as he lives in Spain and his representatives are in Barcelona. The offered original painting was obtained directly from Royo in 1995. This painting is a Royo classic, featuring a strong Royo woman, scantily clad, armed, surrounded by the threatening menace of creatures, in this case Royo's most horrifying demons, which blend into the background and are not even immediately apparent (making them all the more frightening). Royo's most desirable work, his famous signature pieces, are those of strong women, with dramatic landscape backgrounds, presented in this unique style, where the worlds of science fiction, fantasy and pinup collide. This is one of Royo's most published works, used in books, Heavy Metal calendars, advertisements, and even card sets. Most important, it appears as a two-page spread in Royo's classic art book Malific (1994, Norma Editorial, Spain). This is an extraordinary and very significant Royo painting, and an ideal representation of his work both in terms of subject matter and style, as it showcases the most polished and finely detailed hyper-realism for which Royo is so highly regarded. The original artwork of classic modern fantasy pinup artists such as Olivia and Sorayama, while often extremely expensive, are actually available. The fact that the emphasis of Royo's marketing lies in the publishing (calendars, books, prints, etc.) and licensing of his work, rather than the selling of his originals (and the fact that he does not accept commissions from collectors), plays a great role in the virtual absence of his material in the marketplace. This painting is a true masterpiece, with simply incredible detail. Airbrush on Bristol, 1993, entitled The Roofs of Fear. Signed lower right. Mint condition. Dimensions: Image area measures 16 x 19.5 inches, including the white border the painting measures 26.5 x 20 inches. This is a major museum-quality work by Luis Royo, the legendary master of fantasy art. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $4,640.00
