1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Bob Caruthers
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,088.00
1888 N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card of Bob Caruthers, Brooklyn's star pitcher (holding ball in left hand pose). Caruthers was one of the most dominating pitchers of the 1880s. In just nine years in the Majors, he compiled a 218-99 record, including individual season records of 40-13 (1885), 30-14 (1886), 29-9 (1887), 29-15 (1888), 40-11 (1889), and 23-11 (1890). His .688 winning percentage is third on the all-time leaders list. Playing only nine years in the Majors, Caruthers is not eligible for election to the Hall of Fame (a minimum of ten years is required) but he was certainly a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher. This is a very attractive card. The photograph is Near Mint with excellent contrast. The mount has a little wear in the upper two corners, a tiny pinhole in the lower margin that is so small it is virtually undetectable, and a couple of insignificant red marks on the extreme edge of the blank reverse of no consequence (affecting far less than one percent of the surface area). Both of these faults are extremely minor and are mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy, otherwise in overall strong Excellent condition. This is a magnificent star player example from one of the most revered of all nineteenth-century baseball card issues, the N173 Old Judge Goodwin cabinet card series. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,088.00
