1934 Carole Lombard Old Gold Cigarettes Advertising Display

Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $406.00

Old Gold Cigarette store advertising poster measures an extremely impressive 30.5 x 42 inches and features 1930s film legend Carole Lombard (1908-1942). Printed on heavy cardboard with an easel back for display, this "stand alone" advertisement dates to 1934, a seemingly bygone era when cigarettes were not merely accepted, but fashionable. One of the most popular brands of the day, Old Gold was promoted by many glamorous celebrities. Here the strikingly attractive Carloe Lombard is featured large as life beneath the Old Gold banner and next to the slogan, "'So mild and easy on the throat'-Carole Lombard." Below is a promo urging moviegoers to see Lombard's 1934 film Now and Forever costarring Gary Cooper. Lombard is best known today for her headline-grabbing marriage to Clark Gable, but during the dawn of "talkies" she was one of the most popular and sought-after actresses, and was once said to be earning as much as $35,000 a week in her prime. She found her niche as a daffy heroine in such comedies as Twentieth Century and My Man Godfrey for which she was nominated as Best Actress by the Academy. In 1939 Lombard married leading man Clark Gable after an on-again, off-again three-year affair. Tragically, Carole Lombard Gable would die less than three years later in a plane crash outside Las Vegas at the age of thirty-three. The poster is in surprisingly fine condition considering its age and size. Technically in Very Good condition, imperfections include some light surface wear and some minor edge wear and chipping, mostly in the corners, but this is of very little consequence considering its large dimensions, and has no impact on its tremendous display value. The colors are bright and vivid. This is an extremely rare and attractive advertising piece capturing the glamour of 1930s Hollywood. Dimensions: 30.5 x 42 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $406.00
