1954 Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio Original Wire Photograph

Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $928.00

Original wire photograph dated September 12, 1954 captures the All-American hero, Joe DiMaggio, and his Sex Symbol movie star wife, Marilyn Monroe, dining in New York City just weeks before their highly publicized split. All wire photos of Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe dating from their brief months of marriage are highly sought-after by collectors, but this image has a special significance. When the split was announced, the media went into a feeding frenzy, and this was the image, with a "lightening bolt split" added by editors, which was used by thousands of newspapers and magazines all over the world to illustrate the news. The reverse has numerous "International News Photos" copyright and date stamps (including one large ink stamp which reads "Divorced"), and still retains its original International News Photo caption affixed in 1954. The caption reads: "New York: Actress Marilyn Monroe and her husband Joe DiMaggio are shown at El Morocco having dinner together this evening. Marilyn came on to New York to shoot a couple of scenes for a movie and planned to fly back to Hollywood, when Hurricane Edna interfered. Former Yankee star DiMaggio flew into New York today to spend the weekend with his wife." The movie referred to is The Seven Year Itch. Three days from when this photo was taken, Marilyn Monroe would be on Lexington Avenue shooting the famous Subway Grate shot that aroused the imaginations of men everywhere, and the anger of her husband. Though the couple separated that same month, Monroe would remain the one true love of DiMaggio's life, and for twenty years he would have white roses delivered to her grave twice a week. The photograph exhibits minor imperfections typical of original vintage wire photos, and has a single horizontal crease across the very top that does not affect the subjects, overall in Very Good to Excellent condition. Ideal for framing, this is a rare original wire photo featuring one of the last public images, and perhaps the most published of all images, of this legendary couple. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $928.00
