1962-1973 Signed First-Day Cover Collection (54)

Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,508.00

Offered is an extremely impressive collection of fifty-four signed first-day covers representing a broad cross-section of historic Americans. The one thing all have in common is each was deemed worthy of inclusion in one gentleman's collection, which is being offered here in its entirety. Each signature is on one of various commemorative first-day postal envelopes (3.5 x 6.5 inches), all but a few postmarked between 1960 and 1973 (most from the mid-1960s), with special designs honoring artists, cartoonists, politicians, First Ladies, great men and achievements in American history. Most of the envelopes have related limited-edition stamps and relevant postal cancellations. Many of the cartoonists have added a small drawing (Mort Walker/Beetle Bailey, Walter Lantz/Woody Woodpecker, Hank Ketchum/Dennis The Menace, etc.). Among the myriad of signers included are First Ladies (Mamie Eisenhower, Lady Bird Johnson), athletes (Mickey Mantle and A.J. Foyt), entertainers (Shirley Temple, Phyllis Diller), royalty (Princess Grace of Monaco), artists and authors (Norman Rockwell, Agatha Christie), even the infamous (Watergate conspirators Ehrlichman and Haldeman) and many more from politics, the military and TV. One envelope has a cover design tribute to Okinawa, is postmarked April 1, 1945, and signed by Enola Gay pilot Paul W. Tibbets. Another is postmarked July 20, 1969 and signed by astronaut John Glenn. Every autograph is bold, clear and magnificently preserved, grading anywhere from "8" to "10" on a scale of "1" to "10." In a variety of inks and markers, this collection is a result of one man's years of dedicated collecting. The special limited-edition designs of the envelopes and stamps relate to the signers and provide a magnificent presentation for the signatures. This is a unique opportunity to own a fascinating and very carefully assembled collection, almost entirely put together in the 1960s, and consigned directly from the original owner. This collection is full of highlights. Some envelopes feature more than one signature (for example, one has Strom Thurmond, Benjamin Spock, Hubert Humphrey, George Wallace, Alf Landon, Barry Goldwater, and George McGovern). This lot also includes a Jeffries & Manz produced 2.5" x 4" JFK mourning card. Total 54 signed envelopes. All are in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,508.00
