1888 Des Moines Champions B.B. Club Team Cabinet
Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $2,900.00
Stunning team cabinet card of the 1888 Des Moines Base Ball Club of the Western Association features identified portraits of team members surrounded by designs which include a wreath and American flags. The extremely elaborate design of this team cabinet card makes it, in the opinion of many collectors, one of the most spectacular and beautiful nineteenth-century team cards ever produced. This card is extremely rare. In fact, we are not certain if another example exists. This is the very example which appeared on the cover of the August 1978 edition of The Trader Speaks (a copy of which accompanies the lot). In addition to its unusually striking appearance, this is a particularly fascinating team card in that every single player (including Henry Sage, Dan Stearns, "Bug" Holliday, Bill Van Dyke, Dick Phelan, Sam Trott, Bill Traffley, etc.) also enjoyed a Major League career, however brief, and many appear in the N172 Old Judge series. Advertising on mount for LaRoche & Company Studios of Des Moines, Iowa; with blank back, unusual "deckle edge," and flawless contrast. In Near Mint condition. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,900.00
