Circa 1930 Al Capone Original Photograph

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $464.00

Original large-format circa 1930 presentation photograph (7 x 12 inches) of gangster Al Capone, originating from a Capone family album. Based on his smile and dress alone in this photograph, it would be hard to tell that Al Capone was at this time one of the most feared gangsters to ever rule the streets of Chicago. Capone poses, smiling, in a jaunty golf cap and knickers, presenting an image which is a far cry from the scowling, cigar-chomping, pinstriped-suited mob boss so often pictured in newswire photos and books on organized crime. The image is crisp, clear, and captures Capone's larger-than-life persona in a quiet and peaceful moment which is at great odds with his dangerous legend. The story of Al Capone and his organized crime syndicate has been immortalized in the TV series and feature film The Untouchables. This is a fascinating and unique vintage photograph showing a completely different and seldom seen side of one of America's most notorious criminals. The fact that legendary criminals such as Capone are not one-dimensional, that they can be so brutal while at the same time also having families and appearing extremely civilized, is part of their enduring appeal and interest. The verso displays four glue marks at the corners where it had obviously been affixed in an album. The photograph appears to have been cut down from a slightly larger size, exhibiting ever so slightly wavy though clean edges, and is otherwise in Excellent condition with flawless contrast. To the best of our knowledge, this image has never before been published. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $464.00
