1936 Mt. Rushmore Model Photograph Signed and Inscribed by Gutzon Borglum
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $406.00
Striking and extremely historically significant original photograph (6.5 x 8.5 inches) of an early clay model for Mt. Rushmore, beautifully inscribed and signed by its sculptor, Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941). This model of the work-in-progess is of special significance in that the sculpture at this point does not include Theodore Roosevelt, and the hands of both Jefferson and Washington are shown in detail (as opposed to the final version in which this detail is not included). The photograph is signed boldly in black fountain pen, "Greetings Louis Welt, Sincerely yours, Gutzon Borglum, Nov 22-1926" ("9/10"). Shortly after work began on Mt. Rushmore in 1927, Borglum would modify the vision of his masterpiece to the image we are familiar with today. The work was finalized in 1941, the year of the sculptor's death. A fierce patriot and irascible, extroverted personality, Borglum first came to national prominence with his six-ton bust of Abraham Lincoln that was featured at the Theodore Roosevelt White House. This signed photograph is a magnificent tribute to one of America's most enduring and spectacular landmarks, and renowned sculptor Gutzon Borglum, the visionary who dedicated his life to its creation. A simply gorgeous signed piece dating from the earliest conceptions of Mt. Rushmore. Extraordinarily high-quality silver print presentation photograph. In Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $406.00
