1931 Albert Einstein Handwritten & Signed Letter

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,610.00

Albert Einstein letter, handwritten and signed by the great physicist. This one-page letter measures 8.25 x 11 inches and bears no date, but was probably written in 1931. It is written in German to the author Antonia Vallentin-Luchaireo concerning her 1931 biography of German statesman Gustav Stresemann, entitled Stresemann for which Einstein wrote the forward. The letter is not fully translated but it very roughly reads in part: "...I have your book about Stresemann and have partially read it. psychological candor I expected, but that much objectivity toward such eminent a friend frankly astonishes me..." Einstein adds his distinctive signature at the bottom "A. Einstein" ("9"). Gustav Stresemann served as German Chancellor under the Weimar Republic from 1923 to his death in 1929 and did much to repair relations between Germany and her neighbors in the wake of World War I. Unfortunately for his legacy, Hitler and the National Socialists would squander most of this work in a few short years. In 1933, two years after the publication of Antonia Vallentin-Luchaireo's book, Einstein would emigrate to the United States when he accepted an appointment to the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton. Hitler, who came to power in 1933, ordered his property confiscated the following year, and stripped him of his German citizenship. The letter bears the usual mailing folds, which have been reinforced on the reverse with archival tape, two tiny chips at margins are mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy. Otherwise this document is in very fine Excellent condition. This is a tremendous and very unusual Einstein handwritten letter, with a direct connection to his interest in politics, world affairs, and his personal roots. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,610.00
