1888 St. Louis Browns World Beaters Team Cabinet
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,320.00
This rare team cabinet card of the 1888 St. Louis Browns is often referred to by collectors as simply "The Famous World Beaters" team card, as that is how the World Champion St. Louis Browns are identified on the mount. Along with player identifications, the mount is captioned: "The Famous World Beaters St. Louis Browns. Champions of Am. Association Four Successive Years, 1885, '86, '87, '88. Worlds Champions, 1886, 1887." In honor of their fourth consecutive American Association title, owner Chris Von Der Ahe bought each member of the team a matching striped jacket. In this striking team photograph, taken by the very prominent F. W. Gruen Photographic Studios of St. Louis, the team is pictured wearing these jackets. The photograph includes fifteen players, including Hall of Famers Charles Comiskey (center) and Tommy McCarthy, Tip O'Neil, Arlie Latham, the team mascot (youngster dressed in uniform, top row center), and the team's two greyhounds. On the reverse is a very elaborately printed advertisement for F. W. Gruen Photographic Studios. There is some soiling and toning to the borders and to reverse of the mount, as well as some modest corner wear. The mounted photograph of the team is in Near Mint condition. This is an exceptionally rare and very unusual cabinet card of one of the era's most celebrated teams. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,320.00
