Circa 1910 Winston Churchill Signed Photo Postcard
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,160.00
Winston Churchill (1874-1965) signed real-photo postcard published by J. Beagles Post Card Company of London. The circa 1910 card pictures a young, smiling Churchill in overcoat and homburg and is beautifully signed "Winston S. Churchill" ("9") across the bottom front in black ink. Though in places the signature does not contrast sharply against the dark background of the photograph, the signature is a beautifully clean and bold example. Winston Churchill's legend is secure as one of the "Big Three" (along with Stalin and FDR) of WWII who helped shape the postwar world. His career in service to Great Britain began as a soldier seeing battle in India and the Sudan. By the turn of the century Churchill had moved on to become a war correspondent in Africa, and then to politics where he served as a member of Parliament and Minister of War until the 1930s. A staunch critic of Neville Chamberlain's handling of Nazi Germany, Churchill was elevated to Prime Minister when Chamberlain resigned in early 1940, and it was his strong will and keen military mind helped the British get through their darkest hours and ultimately win WWII. The pressures of the war greatly aged Churchill, but this postcard captures the youth and exuberance of the idealistic, vibrant man who helped direct and shape the course of history. The postcard has never been mailed and is in outstanding Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad & John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,160.00
