Extremely Rare Augusta National Country Club Masters Green Jacket

Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $37,700.00

Offered is an original Augusta National Country Club Masters jacket. Few, if any, awards in professional sports are as prized and recognizable and coveted as the green jacket bestowed on golf's Masters winner. Aside from the Masters winners, the only other examples of this revered sports coat in existence belong to the actual members of the Augusta National Country Club, and are never allowed off site. So rare, in fact, are these jackets, that only five examples, to the best of our knowledge, have ever been permitted to leave the hallowed grounds of Augusta National. These five include the jacket once belonging to Bobby Jones, which was sold many years ago at auction for $95,000; an example which is on permanent display at a prominent southern golf resort; and a total of three other examples, including the one offered here. This jacket dates to the late 1960s/early 1970s, and belonged to an extremely high-level American politician of great National prominence. We are honoring the family's request, for the sake of their privacy, to not publish the name of the owner in this catalog, and to reveal the identity only to the winning bidder after the auction. According to the family, the Augusta National member in question gained significant weight over a period of years and requested a new jacket, which was grudgingly approved (it took Jack Nicklaus a well-documented eighteen years to get his jacket replaced for the same problem). Due to his prominent status, the member was allowed to keep his old jacket in a rare moment of consolation by the stodgy Augusta board. This jacket was manufactured by original designers Hart, Schaffner & Marx of Augusta, Georgia, who have since been replaced as manufacturers for the Augusta jackets. The coat retains all its original buttons (two each sleeve, three center) and has only a minute stain on the right shoulder, and some minor discoloration on the collar and right lapel. All stitching, both inside and out, is tight, and the distinctive Augusta National patch over the left breast is clean and vibrant. In Excellent condition overall. The extreme rarity of such a jacket cannot be overemphasized. This is one of the sporting world's greatest and most elusive icons. Unless you've got the game to outplay Tiger, Phil, Ernie and Vijay, this may truly be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $37,700.00
