Circa 1880s Boxer CDVs Collection (13)
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $4,930.00
Collection of thirteen carte-de-visite photographs of famous nineteenth-century boxers highlighted by the legendary John L. Sullivan. Each CDV (2.5 x 4 inches) is mounted on thick card stock with rounded corners (as made) with a brown decorative trim that surrounds the image. This is an extraordinarily rare and high-quality series, though it is unknown how this set was issued as there is no advertising on the reverses. Each boxer is identified beneath his photo, some with an additional title (e.g. "Jem Smith, The Champion of England"). The collection is comprised of: John L. Sullivan (HOF), Peter Jackson (HOF), Tom Sayers (HOF), Jake Kilrain, Jem Smith, Nunce Wallace, Ted Pritchard, Frank Slavin, Bill Goode, Jem Barry, Jim Mace/John Knifton/Pooly Mace (all three posed together on one card), Charles "Toff" Wall, and one unidentified (name present but very light and illegible). Many of the studio images are similar to other boxing issues from the era. Sullivan has a different style mount with square corners. Extremely rare boxing cards such as these are currently valued at a very small fraction of the value of similarly rare and substantial baseball cards. In comparison, they represent an extraordinary value. Nine of the cards grade Vg-Ex to Ex including Sullivan, and four grade Vg. This set is currently uncatalogued. Total 13 CDVs. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $4,930.00
