1968 Topps Football Back of Card Cartoon Artworks (74)

Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $3,190.00

Collection of seventy-four Topps cartoon artworks used in the production of the 1968 Topps Football series. These are the actual cartoon artworks which appear on the backs of the standard 1968 Topps football card series, adding a little humor and extra content to the reverses of the cards, as was standard practice for many Topps sets in the 1950s and 1960s. The seventy-four original ink artworks are on thin board stock. Fifty-six artworks are presented on seven sheets (each sheet measuring 11 x 14 inches, eight artworks per sheet); sixteen artworks are on four panels (each panel measuring 7 x 14.5 inches; four artworks per sheet); and two are presented individually (each 7 x 3 inches). These 74 images represent the cartoons appearing on the backs of approximately one-third of the entire 1968 Topps football set (219 cards). The player's name and card number has been added by Topps in pencil in the margin area of each artwork. This was done to make sure that the correct artwork was assigned to the correct player for card design, and also makes it very easy for us to identify on what card each artwork appears. These artworks include many cartoons which appeared on the reverses of significant star cards, including #1 Bart Starr, 75 Gayle Sayers, 100 Johnny Unitas, 149 Jack Kemp, 157 Ray Nitschke, 161 Fran Tarkenton, 181 Bob Lilly, as well as many other stars. These artworks would be very impressive displayed with their respective published cards. All are in Excellent condition, with one eight-artwork sheet having a few paste-on sections (the only artwork sheet with this design element) which have separated from the sheet (all but one is present and could be reglued), and clear tape at the edges of the four smaller sheets related to production use, in the margin area only, and not affecting the artwork. From the Macaluso Collection (originally purchased at the famous 1989 Topps auction). Total 74 artworks. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $3,190.00
