The 1948 Bowman baseball set was so popular that Bowman decided to try its hand at football cards later in the year, producing this ambitious 108-card football set designed very similarly to its inaugural baseball issue. Football cards never caught on quite like the baseball cards, but Bowman's commitment to the line was unwavering. Bowman continued to issue ever more elaborately designed football sets until its doors closed in 1955. This set will always be the first, and while the 1952 Bowman Large issue has always received the most attention from collectors, many feel that the 1948 Bowman set is actually the rarer of the two. This is a beautiful, completely graded near set, with even most lower-graded cards having tremendous eye appeal, and with forty-nine of the ninety-four cards grading Ex or better by SGC. Total 94 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $1,856.00
