1935 National Chicle Football Original Card Artwork #4 Ed Matesic

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,350.00

Offered is the actual original artwork to card #4 of Ed Matesic, Philadelphia Eagles half-back, from the 1935 R331 National Chicle Football card set. Matesic is a particularly stunning card from the series. When the original National Chicle find surfaced in the 1970s directly from the family of a National Chicle employee, approximately twenty-five National Chicle Football card artworks were included. Matesic was among the first chosen as the "pick of the litter" because of its extraordinary design. Matesic has always been singled out as one of the most striking cards in the 1935 National Chicle Football set, which is so highly regarded for its beautiful art deco-inspired designs. In addition to being one of the few horizontal cards in the series, the detail of the artwork, especially the background, is far more elaborate than most, if not all, other cards in the set. Artwork for card sets from the 1930s is exceedingly rare. The offered artwork of card #4 Ed Matesic is a simply spectacular example of original 1930s gum card artwork from football card collecting's most important set. The artwork is accompanied by an example of the issued card. As is the case with all National Chicle Football artworks, the artwork is on thick artist's board, and measures 4.5 x 5.5 inches. Extremely clean, with sharp, bright, crisp colors. Excellent to Mint. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,350.00
