Circa 1971-1973 Joe Namath New York Jets Game-Used Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $5,000.00, Sold For - $9,860.00

Exceptional Joe Namath game-used road jersey. As detailed in Lou Lampson's and SCD Authentic's extensive reports, this is a far more special and distinctive jersey than normally found for Namath, made specifically for game use in especially cold weather. It takes a certain type of athlete to guarantee victory. An even more select group is comprised of those who have made good on their victory guarantee, and perhaps none of these athletes was as confident, exciting, successful, and outstanding as Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath. Namath's New York Jets, the AFL Champions, were 19-1/2 point underdogs to the NFL Champion Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, and yet "Broadway" Joe guaranteed a Jets victory. Sure enough, Namath vindicated himself by leading his Jets to a 16-7 win, paving the way for the AFL-NFL merger by essentially legitimizing the AFL in the eyes of its critics. His legend was assured. This rare white heavy-style road jersey from the early 1970s is comprised of a cotton/nylon durene blend. Located on the left front tail is the classic double tagged "Sand Knit" labeling with the size "52." The combination of these two tags, as well as their placement, is one of the key factors that helps date this jersey to circa 1971-1973. The player number "12" appears on the front, back and each sleeve of the jersey. Both the front and back numbers are made of green tackle twill, while the sleeve numbers are made of white tackle twill. The back of the jersey, above the number, has a white nameplate lettered "Namath" in green tackle twill. The bottom of the jersey has been neatly cut below the dual tag line. There is evidence of a team repair on the right front shoulder and on the lower back right. Aside from the aforementioned the jersey is all original and unaltered with evidence of light wear. If not for the team repairs, which ironically add to the provenance, the jersey would have received an A10 grade from SCD Authentic. The demand for vintage Joe Namath jerseys from the early 1970s (predating the lightweight mesh from the mid to late 1970s) far exceeds the supply, with this jersey representing one of the few early examples to become available to collectors. Includes an extremely detailed three-page letter of opinion from SCD Authentic jersey expert Lou Lampson, which reviews the many unique qualities of the jersey that define it as an authentic early 1970s jersey. SCD Authentic Grade: A7. LOA from Dave Bushing & Lou Lampson/SCD Authentic. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000. SOLD FOR $9,860.00
