1948 Bowman Basketball Uncut Sheet with George Mikan Rookie Card

Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $6,960.00

Complete 36-card uncut sheet of 1948 Bowman Basketball includes #69 George Mikan, the king of all basketball cards. The 1948 Bowman Basketball series is particularly significant as this was the first set ever issued devoted exclusively to basketball. The George Mikan card in this set is widely recognized as the most sought-after and valuable of all basketball cards. Any 1948 Bowman basketball sheet would be highly prized, but the inclusion of Mikan on this sheet gives it an extremely significant point of interest and appeal. This 1948 issue was the only basketball set Bowman ever produced. The set was issued in two 36-card series; this sheet features the complete set of the scarcer high number series (37-72). As advanced collectors are well aware, 1948 Bowman basketball cards occasionally surface missing the red or blue coloring. It is believed that simple printing errors are responsible for these color variations, and that the "slate back" variations in 1948 Bowman basketball, as well as 1949 Bowman baseball, which have a very similar design, are the result of cards not going through an ink process, or the printing machines running out of ink. This sheet would seem to confirm this theory, as the red is missing on this full production sheet with completely printed backs, and there is just a hint of weakening of color in a few areas of the blue backgrounds. The missing red is not obvious on the Mikan, as his card was designed with only very subtle red accents, and many cards are unaffected because there was no red ever included in their design, but other cards which were intended to have red backgrounds are of the rare "slate back" variety, which this sheet illustrates are clearly the result of the missing red. The reverse of the sheet is fully printed. This is an important uncut sheet, of equivalent significance to basketball cards as a 1951 Bowman high-number sheet with Mickey Mantle would be to baseball cards. The sheet has an Excellent appearance, with imperfections to corner cards (primarily creasing, though #45 in the upper right has some tearing and color touchup), and the two left-edge center cards (#46 and #55), each of which have a quarter-inch tear, a surface scratch that touches both cards, and some minor edge ruffling. The interior cards, including Mikan, are in Near Mint condition. This is a very attractive sheet which displays beautifully. The sheet measures 18.5 x 10 inches. Very professionally matted and double-side framed, so the reverse can easily be viewed if desired, to total dimensions of 26 x 18 inches. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$8,000. SOLD FOR $6,960.00
