Perez-Steele Galleries Hall of Famer Letters Archive (9)
Starting Bid - $200.00, Sold For - $406.00
Perez-Steele Galleries occasionally received correspondence from the Hall of Famers featured on their cards. Presented is a collection of nine letters or notes, each to Perez-Steele Galleries, from Hall of Famers, which have been saved in the files of Perez-Steele Galleries. 1) George Kell (one-page ALS on Tigers stationery dated "12-28-87" thanking Perez-Steele Galleries for the complimentary postcard set and asking for replacements for series #5 and 7, which have been misplaced by his grandson). 2) Joe Cronin (one-page ALS dated "Oct. 18, 1982" including the original mailing envelope). 3) Ted Lyons (handwritten and signed index card reads in part "Dear Frank, Thank you for the cards. I think it is the finest work I ever saw and with such a subject to work with..."). 4) Lefty Gomez: two one-page autograph letters signed, each written on Gomez's personal stationery. The first is misdated "Oct. 1, 1972," should have been 1982, and reads "Thank you very much for the Hall of Fame cards you sent (Perez). They are without a doubt (the best) that I have seen that is just about perfect. The likeness of the player is really life like. Again thank you for the four extra cards of myself." The second letter is dated "Nov 15, 1988" and reads "Received 3 sets of Great Moments cards from you. You certainly made 3 boys very happy and a star out of their grandfather. If ever I can help you please let me know. Again thank you very much Frank. Cordially yours Vernon Lefty Gomez." 5) Carl Hubbell (signed envelope). Frank Steele had sent a card to Hubbell in this envelope to get signed for his personal collection, on which was typed "Please Autograph and Return." Hubbell misinterpreted, and signed and returned the actual envelope. 6) Judy Johnson (handwritten and signed envelope reads "I think your cards are great, and thank you for the one you sent me, Judy Johnson"). 7) Buck Leonard (two signed index cards, one dated "1-8-86" reading "Please send me 50 cards of myself. How much? Thanks. 132-Buck Leonard," accompanied by the original mailing envelope. The second card reads "They are fine [signed] Buck Leonard," apparently in response to receiving fifty complimentary cards of himself in response to his request.). Also included is a TLS dated November 2, 1982 from Ted Williams in which Ted writes that "I think the card is good - really good; the whole series is excellent." This letter has been secretarially signed. All letters and notes are in Near Mint condition. All signatures and writing are essentially flawless ("9" or "10"). Total 9 items. From the Collection of Frank and Peggy Steele/Perez-Steele Galleries Archives. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$600. SOLD FOR $406.00
