Circa 1887 Kalamazoo Bats Original Display Box
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $1,044.00
Extraordinary circa 1887 Kalamazoo Bats store display cigar box dates from approximately (or more likely, exactly) the same time as the famous Kalamazoo Bats baseball cards. Kalamazoo Bats were apparently cigars. The unusual wooden store display box, with black and blue patterned paper covering, opens to reveal the perfectly preserved interior label which reads "Smoke the Kalamazoo Bats" "4 for 10¢" "Chas. Gross & Co., Phila," "Patent No. 11,203." The box measures 14 x 8 x 5 inches, and is uniquely designed with a special hinged flap on the front apron which folds down in the front to display a similar legend. There is some minor general wear to the exterior. The interior is in remarkably undisturbed condition, bright and fresh, and has obviously been perfectly protected from the elements closed for the past 100+ years. Based on known card issues and advertisements, we believe that Kalamazoo Bats was a relatively short-lived brand which was issued only in the late 1880s. Overall in Excellent condition. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,044.00
