Thirteen original pen and ink on board illustrations by Dick Perez . These are the actual artworks used as illustrations in Total Baseball's The Ultimate Baseball Encyclopedia, first published in 1989. Twelve of the artworks were used on the chapter divider pages, each measuring 10 x 13 inches and featuring montages of the greatest players of all time. The players featured on each artwork relate to the theme of the chapter which it precedes. (The "History" chapter montage features six important figures which have had a great impact on the game who are covered in that chapter, such as Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Judge Landis. The "All Time Leaders" artwork features a montage including Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, Pete Rose, etc.). These are the artworks for all twelve chapter title pages in the volume. Each is signed in the lower left. Six Hall of Famers per artwork for most. Included are dozens of Hall of Famers, over sixty different in total. The thirteenth piece in the lot is the larger (15 x 20 inches) Fenway Park game-in-progress illustration which is used as the two-page title frontispiece of the book. Total Baseball, launched to universal acclaim in 1989, has been the most compelling and exhaustive reference series ever devoted to America's pastime. This is an extraordinary series of original artworks which will forever be instantly familiar to fans and scholars of the game as the illustrations used for one of the most important baseball books ever published.
