1887 N172 Old Judge John Clarkson PSA NM 7
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $3,480.00
Graded NM 7 by PSA, the only example at that level, with none graded higher. 1887 N172 Old Judge of Hall of Famer John Clarkson in a pitching pose (right arm horizontal, left hand clear of thigh), with team identified as "Bostons." An outstanding super high-grade example, perfectly clean both front and back, with square corners, and excellent contrast. This is a magnificent ultra high-grade example of one of the nineteenth century's key Hall of Famers. This is also a fascinating card as it must have been issued just after Clarkson finished the 1887 season with Chicago, and signed with Boston for the upcoming season. There were not yet any photographs of Clarkson in a Boston uniform available, so Goodwin took a photo of Clarkson in his Chicago uniform and had the art department add "Boston" onto his uniform. Close examination of the photograph easily allows this to be seen, giving the card an added dimension of interest and appeal. It is very rare to find Old Judges in such high grade, let alone Hall of Famers. Near Mint condition. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,480.00
