June 17, 1919 Christy Mathewson Signed Tax Exemption Booklet from France
Starting Bid - $800.00, Sold For - $4,312.50
Extraordinary signed Christy Mathewson document relating to his service in the armed forces during World War I. Mathewson served as captain of the Chemical Warfare Service division. He spent most of 1919 in France on duty. While in France he was issued this tax exemption coupon booklet, on June 17th, 1919. Mathewson has beautifully signed the interior cover, "C. Mathewson" ('9") in fountain pen where directed, and has also filled out his rank and the Date of Issue in the spaces provided ("Capt. CWS, June 17, 1919"). The tax exemption coupon booklet was provided to allow Mathewson exemption from paying luxury taxes on articles purchased during his stay in France. Both the front and back covers are present, but have been carefully separated to allow for ideal display. They were originally connected by a staple. Also included are three interior sheets of unused tax exemption coupons, which were to be signed and presented to the merchant at the time of purchase to allow exemption from luxury tax. There is a single vertical fold line to the booklet, not affecting visual appearance, likely the result of traveling in Mathewson's wallet or pocket. Measures 3 x 6.75 inches. Very Good to Excellent condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $4,312.50
