1940-45 Mutoscope Pinup Cards Near Complete Set Collection (246/258)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $4,887.50
Offered is a tremendous collection of 246 different Mutoscope pinup cards issued from 1940 to 1945, representing a near complete collection of all Mustoscope pinups ever issued (missing only 12 cards). In the style of Exhibit cards of the era, from 1940 to 1945 the Mutoscope Reel Company issued cards featuring beautiful pinup artwork by the top illustrators of the day, for sale in penny arcade machines. The public's appetite for pinup art exploded during this era, with images by artists such as Gil Elvgren, Zoe Mozert, and Earl Moran appearing on everything from matchbook covers to ink blotters to calendars. Fortunately, youngsters were not left out of this impressive production of printed matter, as the Mutoscope Company made these (for the times) very risqué images available to kids throughout the land at amusement parks and anywhere arcade machines could call home. This virtually complete collection of all cards issued from 1940 to 1945 (missing only 12 cards) includes the following: 1940 Glamour Girls (32 cards complete), 1941 All-American Girls (31 of 33 cards in set), 1942 Yankee Doodle Girls (32 cards complete), 1943 Hotcha Girls (62 of 65 cards in the set), 1944 Follies Girls (25 of 32 cards in the set), and 1945 Artist Pinups (64 cards complete). This is a very carefully assembled collection put together over a period of many years by a very dedicated and very advanced collector. This is a collection which would be nearly impossible to duplicate, but fortunately most of the work has been done. The torch is passed to the winner to find the missing 12 cards for completion. Very crisp, clean, sharp-looking collection of these very scarce classics of American Popular Culture. 80% Ex to Nr/Mt, 20% Vg-Ex/Ex (due to slight corner wear, no creases). Total 246 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $4,887.50
