1942 R164 "War Gum" Original Artwork to Card #42 Flying Tigers
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $920.00
Original artwork to card #42 from the classic Gum, Inc. "War Gum" series. This is a particularly exciting card from this significant wartime set which chronicled the events of the era as they unfolded. Entitled "U.S. Tigers Blast Jap Column," the card captures an attack by U.S. bombers on Japanese and Thai ground troop columns which occurred on January 27, 1942. This is the actual artwork used to produce the card. The artwork is an ink line drawing on artist's board (9 x 7.5 inches), with the printed card caption title applied. A thin glassine overlay has been neatly colored by Gum, Inc. artists. This overlay served as the color guide for the printer. Comic book art of this era was similarly produced by artists in black and white and printed in full color. This artwork originates from the estate of the Gum Inc. art director Charles Steinbacher. Steinbacher was very proud of his involvement with Gum, Inc. cards, and he saved a selection of original Gum, Inc. art his entire life. The artwork was sold in recent years by the Steinbacher family. This was one of the most significant finds of original card artwork to ever surface. If the past is any indication for such finds, in future years collectors will be wondering what happened to the artwork from the famous Gum, Inc. find, especially prime examples such as this one which capture the spirit of the set. The glassine overlay has a few minor tears. The artwork is in Excellent condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $920.00
