1941 R157 "Uncle Sam" Original Artwork to Card #36
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $920.00
Original artwork to card #36 from Gum, Inc.'s "Uncle Sam" series. Entitled "Telling the Marines," this striking card is one of several which show the different divisions of the armed forces, in this case the Marines. This is the actual artwork used to produce the card. The artwork is an ink line drawing on artist's board (8.5 x 10 inches). A thin glassine overlay has been neatly colored by Gum, Inc. artists. This overlay served as the color guide for the printer. Comic book art of this era was similarly produced by artists in black and white and printed in full color. This artwork originates from the estate Charles Steinbacher, the art director of Gum Inc., and was saved until recent years by his family. The glassine overlay has some creasing. The artwork is in Excellent condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $920.00
