1933 R39 Dare Devils Original Artwork
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,725.00
Actual original artwork to card #2, entitled "Frank Luke, Balloon Buster" from the 1933 Dare Devils set issued by National Chicle. All gum card artwork from the 1930s is extremely rare. In fact, for most sets of the era there exists not a single surviving example. The general rule of thumb is either there are many original artworks in existence from a given issue, or none. When the archives of National Chicle were discovered 25 years ago, included were several dozen baseball artworks, approximately 30 National Chicle Star Football artworks, over 50 Sky Bird artworks, and approximately 20 Dare Devil artworks. These artworks have long been scattered to the four corners of the collecting world. The offered original artwork is a choice example from this classic 1930s non-sport set, featuring a biplane flying among burning dirigibles, with at least one disaster victim presumably parachuting to safety. The artwork is bright, crisp, and clean, and is an ideal example of original art from this popular set, with exceptional detail, originating from one of card collecting's most significant finds. 4 x 5.5 inches. In Near Mint condition. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,725.00
