Stephan Dohanos (1907-1994) Original Art
Starting Bid - $4,000.00, Sold For - $7,475.00
Spectacular original painting by Stephan Dohanos, capturing an American tradition, features a little girl's height being marked with pencil on the wall by her proud parents, with grandfather looking on. There is a strong quality of 1950s nostalgia about this painting, which is not surprising as the artist, Stephan Dohanos, was one of the key cover artists for The Saturday Evening Post in the 1940s and 1950s, producing 123 published Post covers during his career. This painting dates from circa 1957 and may have been intended as a cover piece for the Post, though it has been suggested to us that it may have been used as a cover for a magazine by the name of Medical Times, a publication for which Dohanos also produced many covers. The reverse label identifies the formal title of the artwork as "Measuring Her Height." Dohanos' work can be found today in such prestigious venues as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, as well as many private collections. This is a spectacular example of original art from one of the universally recognized masters of American Illustration Art. Gouache/tempera on board, circa 1957, signed lower right. With a few light scratches along the upper right corner (not affecting the central image). Dimensions: 22 x 24 inches. Matted and framed to dimensions of 36 x 39 inches. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $6,000/$8,000. SOLD FOR $7,475.00
