3/25/63 Greta Garbo Signed Check
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,035.00
Greta Garbo personal bank check, drawn on the Chase Manhattan Bank of New York, dated March 25, 1963 and made out to Joeue Langlo in the amount of $100.00. The check is boldly signed "Greta Garbo" ("10") in black ink. One of Hollywood's most famous actresses during the 1930s, Garbo stunned the film community with her sudden retirement from movies in 1941. From then, until she passed away in 1990, the Great Garbo lived in legendary seclusion, shunning all photo, interview, and signature requests. In fact, during her lifetime Garbo-signed items were so rare that fans often went through her garbage hunting for examples. These efforts proved largely unsuccessful. Garbo's signature during her lifetime was so scarce that it was widely recognized as the rarest, and most valuable of all living persons. It is only since her death that a small number of examples from her estate have found their way into the collecting world. The offered check is an ideal example, with the signature extraordinarily large and bold. A magnificent signed personal item from this most enigmatic of screen stars. Normal bank cancellation marks and stamps do not affect the signature. Excellent condition. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad and John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,035.00
