1893 Sigmund Freud Handwritten & Signed Prescription for "White Powder"
Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $2,875.00
Extraordinary original handwritten and signed prescription from Sigmund Freud is scripted in German and calls for a certain "white powder." The prescription, measuring 2 x 3 inches, is dated 1893 and signed "Dr. Freud" ("9") in vintage black fountain pen. The reference to "white powder" presumably refers to cocaine, a product which Freud is extremely well known as an early advocate. In 1884 Freud, then 28 years old, wrote a paper entitled "On Coca" describing the history, effects and benefits of cocaine. Though the paper may have only been a parroting of pharmaceutical company advertisements at the time, it is known that Freud used cocaine himself and touted it to associates. Many believe the Father of Psychoanalysis was addicted to cocaine; however, many scholars believe it is more likely that his drug of choice was the nicotine he received from the twenty cigar-a-day habit he developed. The prescription is beautifully framed with a non-vintage photograph (7 x 9 inches) of Freud with cigar in hand. The prescription is in remarkably fine condition, with only some minor foxing and the hint of a horizontal and vertical crease, apparently from long ago being folded. Close examination reveals perforations along the left side of the prescription slip, where it was removed from Freud's pad. The signature and all writing are extremely bold and clear. This is an amazing signed item, and a sensational conversation piece, relating to the legend of one of the most influential and authoritative thinkers of the twentieth century. Ideal for display. Framed to total dimensions of 16.5 x 23 inches. LOA from James Spence, Steve Grad and John Reznikoff/PSA DNA. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $4,000/$8,000. SOLD FOR $2,875.00
