Five Pete Maravich Signed Checks (5)
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,587.50
Five Pete Maravich personal checks, each written between March 21, 1986 and March 27, 1987. The signatures grade a "9" overall and the checks themselves are Near Mint (three checks have a single centerfold, which does not in any way affect the signatures). Also included in this lot are five letters of authenticity from Jackie Maravich, Pete's wife, stating that her husband personally signed these checks and that they have been in the Maravich family archives since they were returned by the bank. It is always interesting for us to follow the market for desirable checks of legendary figures in the years following their release. When they first surface, it always appears there is a large supply. In the early 1970s, the retail price for a Ty Cobb check was $5. Thousands were available. In past years, hundreds of Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and even Marilyn Monroe checks have surfaced. All have been totally absorbed by the collecting community. The supply of Maravich checks, all of which have been released during just the past two years, is limited, and Maravich checks will also, no doubt, eventually join the ranks of the very-difficult-to-find among personal checks of sporting legends. Hall of Famer "Pistol" Pete Maravich started his basketball career as a 6'5'' guard from LSU, where he set the record as the greatest scorer in college basketball history. He then went on to join the professional ranks, playing in 10 NBA seasons and four NBA All-Star Games. Maravich will forever be remembered for his dazzling style of play and as one of basketball's greatest legends. Total 5 checks. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,587.50
