1936 R311 Diamond Stars Glossy Premiums Near Complete Set (26/28)
Starting Bid - $400.00, Sold For - $1,495.00
Extraordinary complete set minus two of this very scarce 1930s premium set issued by National Chicle Gum, missing only the Boston Braves and Chicago Cubs for completion. Each glossy premium measures 6 x 8 inches, and features an individual star or team photograph. These large premiums have often been overlooked by collectors. For some reason a few premiums in this set (such as Traynor and Terry) are far more common than the rest of the set. These few sometimes give collectors the idea that this issue can be easily assembled in set form, but the fact is that almost all of the premiums in the set are rare, so much so that when seen, they are noticeably striking as unusual, even to advanced collectors. This set (minus two) has been assembled by a very dedicated 1930s premium collector, sparing no expense in time, energy, or patience. This is an exceptionally clean and high-grade collection for R311s, which crease very easily due to the thin stock on which they are printed. The grades of this set break down as follows: 13 Ex (or better), 8 Vg-Ex/Ex, 3 Vg-Ex, 2 Vg. Almost all graded less than Ex have been downgraded due to small, insignificant creases, and otherwise have an Ex or better overall appearance. The entire set is essentially comprised of highlights, including: "Pepper Martin with the little boy" (Vg-Ex/Ex. In the old days, this premium was always referred to in this manner, and was considered a special rarity), Dizzy Dean (Nr/Mt), Jimmy Foxx (Ex), Frankie Frisch (Vg-Ex/Mt), Yankees with Gehrig (Ex-Mt), National League All-Stars 1935 (Ex), St. Louis Cardinals (Vg-Ex/Ex). This is the first (near) complete set of R311 that we can ever remember offering. Total 26 R311s, representing a complete set minus two of this elusive 1930s premium issue. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,495.00
