1912 S110 Baseball-Motif Silk Pillowcase

Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $3,737.50

Exceptional example of the classic S110 pillowcase tobacco premium featuring baseball players. This colorful display piece could be obtained only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Helmar and Turkey Red Tobacco. The pillowcase features Christy Mathewson in the center surrounded by "Home Run" Baker, Tris Speaker, Ty Cobb, and Marty O'Toole. The illustrations of the ballplayers are identical to those used in the S81 premium silk set, and almost identical to those used in the T3 Turkey Red set and the rare L1 Leather set, all of which were part of this same promotion. The pillowcase was the ultimate prize of the promotion, requiring the most coupons in exchange (100 coupons were needed to get a pillowcase). Not only are S110 pillowcases one of the premier tobacco-related display pieces of the era, in the eyes of many advanced collectors they also represent one of the most outstanding values in all of 1910- era tobacco issues. An S81 of Ty Cobb alone would sell for far more than an S110 (which includes Cobb) in similar condition. Bright and clean, with crisp colors, this is a far superior example of S110 than usually found, and is ideal for display. As is often the case with S110s, very close inspection reveals very small threading marks from long ago being sewn onto a pillow. There is a very small stain to the right of Baker's foot in the background, but this is very minor and mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy, otherwise it is in superb Excellent condition. This pillowcase has no fading, which is a common problem with S110s, making it an especially ideal example for display. Measures 22.5 x 22.5 inches. Beautifully and very professionally framed to dimensions of 31.25 x 31.25 inches. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $2,500/$5,000. SOLD FOR $3,737.50
