1887-1890 N172 Old Judge Collection of 43
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $8,625.00
Very attractive collection of 43 N172 Old Judges. Includes Hall of Famers Hugh Duffy, Wilbert Robinson, and Roger Connor. The photo quality of the group is particularly strong overall. Condition technically ranges the entire grading scale, but all are quality cards worthy of inclusion in any collection of these early classics. The grades which follow do not take into account remnants on the reverse from once being glued or taped into an album (which affect all but 8 cards) or an occasional reverse pencil notation, both of which are common to find when dealing with collections of Old Judges. Condition breakdown: 15 cards Ex: Burdock (Boston NL), Clements (catching, Phil NL), Farrar (fielding, Phil), two Ferguson (throwing, Phil), Flanigan (Clev), Hecker (Louisville), Johnston (Boston NL), Kilroy (Balt) no right border factory miscut, Mullane (Cin) with tiny piece of clear tape lower left corner, Quinn (Boston NL), D Richardson (NY NL), Bierbauer (Phil AA), Stovey (Phil AA), Tiernan (NY NL) with slight miscut. 4 cards Vg-Ex/Ex: Geiss (Chi NL), Bastian (Chicago NL), P. Smith (Phil AA), Sprague (Clev). 12 cards Vg-Ex: J. Burns (KC), Cahill (Indianapolis), Decker (Phil NL), Ferguson (hands at chest, Phil), Dunlap (lying down, Pitts), Irwin (Phil NL), H. Long (KC), Pfeffer (throwing), McGuire (Phil NL), Nash (Boston NL), Burns (Bklyn), Tebeau (Chi NL). 3 cards Vg: Roger Connor (NY), J. Ewing (Louisville) great looking card with 1889 copyright but has some writing on front, O'Day (Wash). 6 cards Good: Clements (catching, Phil NL), Hugh Duffy (Chicago NL) photo contrast fair due to pink style, Farrar (catching, Phil), Fogarty (Phil NL), Pfeffer (w/bat), Sullivan (Chi NL). 3 cards lesser grades: Wilbert Robinson (Phil AA) appears Vg-Ex but has been skinned, Dunlap (hand above head, Pitts) with two pin holes, Zimmer (Clev) bottom ad trimmed otherwise Vg-Ex. Very substantial group highlighted by three Hall of Famers, several rare cards, and an extraordinary example of Harry Stovey. Total 43 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $8,625.00
