1916 Chicago White Sox Panoramic Team Photograph (Joe Jackson)
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $4,887.50
Extraordinary panoramic presentation photograph captures the 1916 Chicago White Sox, including six of the future banned 1919 Black Sox players (Joe Jackson, Buck Weaver, Happy Felsch, Fred McMullin, Lefty Williams, and Eddie Cicotte). The entire team is lined up, seated or crouched in the foreground, in their White Sox home uniforms. Joe Jackson is on the far left. Behind the players, posed for this special presentation photograph, are their guests, the delegates to the annual National Rural Letter Carriers Association convention. The Association held their annual convention in Chicago in 1916, and a visit to see the White Sox was planned as a special event. This photograph was created as a keepsake of the day. The presentation is very elaborately and expensively constructed, with custom-made identification matting. This is the only known example of this panoramic, so it is unknown whether all the letter carriers originally received a panoramic photographic, or just a select few. The caption on the matting reads in gold lettering: "Delegates to the Fourteenth Annual Convention of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association enjoying the National game at the White Sox Baseball Park, Chicago, Ill. Wednesday, August Ninth, Nineteen Hundred and Sixteen." Illustrations of the White Sox ballpark and Chicago's famous Montgomery Ward & Co. store appear in the lower left and right corners of the mat, each with identification below. This is a top-quality photograph, with outstanding production quality, and with flawless contrast. The grandstands in the background are crystal clear, with fans scattered about. A couple of youngsters posed behind the players, holding large White Sox pennants, adds an additional very nice touch. The photograph measures 9 x 26 inches. The matting measures 29.5 x 12 inches. The display is presented is in its original wood frame (total dimensions: 31.5 x 14.5 inches). The original wood frame has a couple of small nicks but is still in Excellent condition. The photograph and the original mat are in virtually flawless Nr/Mt-Mt condition. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $4,887.50
