Circa 1946 Satchel Paige Signed KC Monarchs Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $2,070.00
Circa 1946 Rawlings "Official League" model ball is signed by Satchel Paige ("7/8") on a side panel ("7/8"), beneath which Paige has added the inscription "Kansas City Monarch Base-Ball Club." The ball is also signed by Bob Feller (sweet spot, "3"), and Bob Lemon (side panel, "7"). These are vintage signatures. A second, bolder Feller signature ("8") was added in 1983, and appears on a side panel (signed "Bob Feller 8-30-83"). This ball was signed during the famous series of barnstorming exhibition games of the 1940s, played between Negro League All Stars, led by Satchel Paige, and Major League All Stars, led by Bob Feller. The vintage signatures have each been covered with a very light coat of shellac or nail polish for protection (this was done in the 1940s), otherwise the ball is in Excellent condition. Early vintage signatures of Paige on a baseball are rare, and this is a particularly special example due to the inscription identifying Paige as a member of the Negro League's Kansas City Monarchs. Displays beautifully as the ultimate Paige "single," though of course there are several additional signatures on the ball. The fact that these extra signatures identify the ball as from the famous Paige/Feller exhibition games of the 1940s adds an extra element of historical significance and interest. The ball is in Excellent condition, with all manufacturer's stampings bold and clear. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,070.00
