Two 1913 Boston Garters Evers and Herzog
Starting Bid - $2,000.00, Sold For - $8,050.00
Two rare 1913 Boston Garters comprise this lot: The first is Hall of Famer Johnny Evers. The second is Charles "Buck" Herzog, who though he finished the 1913 season with the Giants, is noted on the reverse as being "Manager of Cincinnati National League team for the season of 1914" (once again strongly suggesting that the set was actually issued in 1914, as opposed to the 1913 year of issue which has always been associated with this set). The Evers appears to be in Excellent condition, but under a black light we have detected a very minor degree of extremely professional restoration to a very small area at the center of the left border (less than half a dime in area) which appears to have been executed to remedy damage caused by a silver fish insect. This restoration is virtually undetectable, and does not detract from the otherwise Excellent condition of the card, but must be duly noted for the sake of accuracy. The second card, Herzog, has some corner wear, particularly in the upper left corner, and some very light residue, possibly from glue that has long been removed, barely detectable along the far right side. The reverse has the remnants of five small clear stamp hinges, and two small notations, one reading "1911," the other "H813." Despite minor faults, Herzog is still a clean and very attractive example in overall Vg condition. Each measure 8.25 x 4 inches. Total two cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $4,000/$6,000.
