1951 Will Harridge Single-Signed Baseball
Starting Bid - $500.00, Sold For - $1,150.00
Spalding "Official Pro League" baseball is magnificently single-signed by Will Harridge ("9") in blue ink on the sweet spot. This is a particularly large, extremely bold signature, ideal for display. The ball has been coated with a very thin layer of protective shellac (possibly nail polish) which has not yellowed with age. Neatly printed notations on a side panel read "Will Harridge, Cooperstown" and a year date which is a little hard to decipher with certainty but which we believe reads "1951." As president of the American League from 1931 to 1959, Harridge attended many Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Cooperstown, and this ball, as suggested by the period notations, was almost certainly signed at such an event. This is an amazing single-signed ball of a very elusive Hall of Famer, whose signature as a single on a ball is even rarer than collectors realize. Harridge died in 1971, long before single-signed ball collecting became the universally recognized standard. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1972. As an executive, as opposed to a player, Harridge was lucky to be asked to sign a multisignature ball at a Cooperstown gathering, let alone a single. Few fans ever even thought to make the investment of a ball for Harridge's signature alone. This is a tremendous Harridge single. In addition to the large high-grade signature, with ideal placement on the sweet spot, the ball itself is in Near Mint condition. LOAs Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,150.00
