1910 Boston-New York Double Header Panorama

Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $4,600.00

Extremely interesting and attractive panoramic display photograph (6.25 x 42 inches) captures an extraordinary game-in-progress scene. The Red Sox are playing the New York Americans at Boston's Huntingdon Avenue Grounds Park. The photographer's caption reads "28,221 People See Boston-New York Double Header July-27-1910." The stands are filled with thousands upon thousands of fans. Many fans are watching the game from the perimeter of the field, on the sidelines, and in the outfield. Policeman dot the edge of the field, keeping order and ensuring that fans do not disturb the progress of the game. There is incredible detail to this photo, and it is simply astounding to see how much is really going on in the image. Armed with a magnifying glass, the entire world of the stadium is revealed. This photograph provides a window into 1910-era baseball and American culture in a manner which few photographs can approach. This is a masterpiece of the photographer's art, and an extraordinary example of panoramic photography. We believe that the significance of the game, the reason it has been commemorated by this elaborately produced photographic presentation, is that this was a huge crowd at this time for a baseball game, and may in fact have been a record crowd for the stadium to date. It would be hard to imagine a bigger crowd. There are no empty seats, and thousands of fans are watching from the field. The extraordinary detail of the photo allows us to see that the catcher has just thrown the ball back to the pitcher, with his arm still extended from the throw. The player images are too small to identify, especially with many New York players with their backs to the camera, but the New York Americans are in the field, and most of the Red Sox team players are huddled in the dugout, though some are seated outside. Glines & George photographers' credit (of 523 Washington St., Boston) appears in the far left. Beautifully framed to dimensions of 7.5 x 43 inches. The panoramic photograph is in virtually flawless condition, with no tears and no creases, and with superb clarity and contrast. Ideal for display. Near Mint condition. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,600.00
