1906 Henry Chadwick Signed Cabinet Card Photograph
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $17,250.00
Cabinet card photograph (6 x 9 inches) of Henry Chadwick, beautifully signed, inscribed, and dated on the mount in brown ink as follows: "Nov 7, 1906, To my Esteemed Colleague Abe Yager, In the 20th Anniversary of your Continuous Service to the Eagle - From your dear friend, Henry Chadwick." Abe Yager was Chadwick's protégé. Yager wrote side by side with Chadwick at The Brooklyn Eagle, and was himself one of the most prominent sportswriters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The photograph has small clippings affixed to the reverse, two of which identify this photograph as being taken in January 1906 by very well known Brooklyn photographer Frank Pearsall. This is a particularly significant photo of Chadwick, as this is an original print of the very same image of Chadwick which appears in the 1906 Spalding Guide. Pencil notations and clippings on the reverse have a very interesting implication, as they indicate that this signed photograph, after being presented by Chadwick to Abe Yager in 1906, was lent by Yager to the The Brooklyn Eagle and used as an illustration with Chadwick's obituary when he passed away in 1908. The silhouetting of Chadwick's portrait, a common practice by newspapers when preparing photos for publication, as well as border cropping notations, are both consistent with its use for publication. The photographer's signature ("Pearsall") appears lightly in pencil in the upper left corner of the mount. This is an absolutely extraordinary Henry Chadwick signed photograph, directly relating to The Brooklyn Eagle, the paper with which Chadwick is most closely associated, signed and inscribed to Chadwick's protégé, Abe Yager, himself one of the most prominent sportswriters of the day. The photograph has an exceptionally impressive display value, and by any measure is one of the finest of the few known Chadwick signed photographs in existence. The signature and salutation are extremely bold, grading at least an "8" on a scale of "1 to 10," and show up particularly well against the light colored bright, clean mount. The cabinet photograph, without reference to silhouetting and reverse notations/clippings, is in Excellent condition. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $17,250.00
