1906 Fan Craze National League Playing Card Complete Set (54)
Starting Bid - $1,500.00, Sold For - $4,887.50
This complete set of 54 playing cards feature what many collectors consider the finest portrait poses of turn-of-the-century ballplayers ever produced on baseball cards. Issued in 1906 by the Fan Craze Company of Cincinnati, these cards were designed as a deck of baseball game playing cards. Thirteen Hall of Famers are represented, including Honus Wagner, Brown, Duffy, McGraw, Hanlon, Kelley, Clarke, Bresnahan, McGinnity, Beckley, Huggins, and Willis. Also included is National League President Harry Pulliam. The Fan Craze set has a special significance to collectors, as it is one of the few sets issued in the earliest years of the twentieth century, and includes many players who appear in no other card sets. Because of its year of issue, it is also one of the few sets which include a blend of 1910 era stars along with players who made their mark in the nineteenth century, such as Joe Kelley and Jake Beckley, who in 1906 were just winding down their playing careers. The original box, game board with nails, and directions for play, are also included, and are in Excellent condition. This is a sharp looking set, which was probably played with a few times back in 1906, and has been stored untouched ever since in its original box. 52 cards range from Excellent to Near Mint condition, with the remaining two cards (Wagner and Seymour) in ever so slightly lesser condition, each with a minor crease. This spectacular pre-war set is one of the few, and one of the most important, issues of the era, and in the opinion of many also represents one of the best values of all cards issued in the early 1900s. Total 54 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $4,887.50
