1940 Joe DiMaggio Hillerich & Bradsby Advertising Display
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $1,840.00
This incredibly rare Hillerich & Bradsby advertising poster (15.5 x 21.5 inches) features a full-color illustration of Joe DiMaggio at bat, with his accurately drawn face and head atop a small caricature body. In the style of 1938 Goudey's "Heads-Up" baseball card series, issued just two years prior, DiMaggio is surrounded by small cartoon vignettes summarizing his on-the-field heroics. The red Hillerich & Bradsby logo appears in the lower left corner. Many are familiar with the very scarce and the classic set of four H & B signs issued in 1947, featuring Williams, Musial, Mize, and Vernon. Few have ever seen, or even heard of, this similarly designed H & B display issued years earlier. This is only the second example of this Joe DiMaggio H & B poster we have ever seen. The other example was part of the legendary Barry Halper Collection, and appeared as Lot #2256 in the famous Halper auction, selling for $4,887. The poster has a few light creases, a couple small border tears, and some very light water staining primarily in the upper right (interestingly, the Halper example also had this same very light water staining), but these flaws do not significantly detract from the extremely impressive display value of this extraordinary advertising rarity. Technically in Very Good condition, but with an Excellent appearance hanging on the wall. Beautifully and very professionally framed to dimensions of 23 x 28.5 inches. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $1,840.00
