1936 Lou Gehrig Signed Personal Bank Check
Starting Bid - $4,000.00, Sold For - $14,950.00
Lou Gehrig personal bank check, filled out entirely in his hand, and made payable to The Sporting News in the amount of $25. Gehrig has signed the check with a large and very rare full name signature, "Henry Louis Gehrig." The check is dated "5/19/36" and is drawn on the First National Bank of New Rochelle. Gehrig lived in New Rochelle, New York. Gehrig personal checks are virtually nonexistent. We have seen only two or three examples surface over the years. While cancelled checks have always been a very popular area of collecting, the fact that this check is signed with Gehrig's full name ("Henry Louis Gehrig") provides an additional very significant distinction and dimension of interest, as very few full name Gehrig signatures are known to exist. The fact that the check is made payable to The Sporting News also gives it a connection with baseball that is worthy of note. This very check is the example which was sold at the 20th Annual National Sports Collectors Convention in 1999. It appeared as Lot #47, and sold for $11,500. It has been consigned to this sale directly from the original purchaser at that auction, and is accompanied by the original 1999 auction catalog, as well as a non-vintage photographic print of Gehrig. The check has three vertical creases, apparently from long ago being folded and put in a wallet. The check has long ago separated along the center crease, bisecting the "H" in "Henry," and has been beautifully restored by a professional. This crease/separation is virtually undetectable. Otherwise the signature is very strong, grading an "8" on a scale of "1 to 10", and the check is in Very Good condition. One of the rarest of all Hall of Famer checks, and an extraordinary Gehrig signed item. LOAs from Mike Gutierrez/GAI and James Spence & Steve Grad/PSA DNA. Reserve $4,000. Estimate $8,000/$12,000. SOLD FOR $14,950.00
