1887 N172 Old Judge Collection of 160

Starting Bid - $10,000.00, Sold For - $23,000.00

Offered is an amazing collection of 160 Old Judges. Issued by Goodwin & Company from 1887 to 1890, Old Judges are universally recognized as the premier nineteenth- century baseball card set. This uncommonly large collection includes numerous scarcities and rare teams. Old Judges have always been appreciated for their great historical significance as the first major baseball card set. In the "old days" it was possible to find these classics at shows, in auctions, and sometimes even at flea markets. As any collector of vintage cards can attest, these days Old Judges have virtually disappeared from the collecting landscape. Old Judges rarely surface today in any quantity and the offering of even a few cards makes serious collectors take note. Cards are usually offered individually, and "commons" can bring prices which just a few short years ago would have been thought appropriate only for Hall of Famers. The 160 cards in this lot are an advanced collection unto themselves, and included are cards which will improve virtually any world class Old Judge collection, of which there are few. Condition: 25% are Ex (or better), 75% range from Good to Vg-Ex (includes a few in slightly lesser condition, but all are still nice looking cards). These grades are without reference to notations, scrapbook paper attached, light paper loss or glue marks to the blank reverses, as minor back flaws are standard for Old Judges. Including the following: Boston Beaneaters: Wise. Brooklyn Bridegrooms: Bushong, Caruthers, Henderson, Holbert, Hughes, Orr, Smith, Toole, and Visner. Chicago White Stockings: Baldwin, Brynan, Burns, Clarke, Darling, Dwyer, Flint, Geiss, Krock, McCormick, Pfeffer, Ryan, Sprague, Sullivan, and Williamson. Cincinnati Red Stockings: Fennelly, Kappel, Keenan, Mullane, Nicol, Reilly, Smith, and Viau. Cleveland Spiders: Alberts, Beatin, Daly, Faatz, Goodfellow, McAleer, McKean, O'Brien, Sutcliffe, Tebeau, and Zimmer. Columbus Solons: Bligh, Easterday, and Mays. Denver: Fagan, Klusman, and Silch. Des Moines: Connell, Emmerke, Hart, Kennedy, and Phelan. Indianapolis Hoosiers: Arundel, Bassett, Boyle, Burdick, Denny, Getzein, Glasscock, Healey, Myers, Seery, Schomberg, and Shreve. Kansas City Cowboys: Davis, Manning, Porter, and Swartzel. Milwaukee: Fuller, Herr, Mills, Schenkle, and Sutton. Minneapolis: Graves, Hanrahan, Jantzen, Krieg, Minnehan, and West. New York Giants: Brown, Collins, Crane, Deasley, Dorgan, George, Gillespie, Gore, Hatfield, Murphy, Richardson, Roach, Slattery, Tiernan, Titcomb, and Whitney. Philadelphia Athletics: Bierbauer, Gleason, Larkin, and Whitacre. Philadelphia Quakers: Andrews, Buffinton, Casey, Clements, Daily, Decker, Farrar, Ferguson, Fogarty, Hallman, Irwin, McGuire, Mulvey, Sanders, Schriver, and Wood. Pittsburgh Alleghenys: Brown, Kuehne, Maul, McKinnon, Miller, Nichols, Smith, and Staley. St. Josephs: Crowell, Curtis, Knell, and Mahoney. Sioux City: Burks, Crotty, Flanigan, Genins, Hungler, and Powell. St. Louis Browns: Boyle, Chamberlain, Devlin, Duffe, Lyons, Milligan, O'Neill, and Somers. St. Louis Whites: McCormack, Nicholson, and Sproat. Washington Nationals: Carroll, Dealy, Donnelly, Farrell, Gilligan, Haddock, Keefe, O'Brien, Shoch, Whitney, and Wilmot. Worchester: Annis and Cudworth. Due to practical considerations, we can only illustrate a selection from this significant collection in our printed catalog, but have provided images of all 160 cards on our website. This collection represents an extremely rare opportunity to acquire 160 different players from the highly desirable N172 Old Judge Set. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000/$30,000.
