Circa 1945 NY Black Yankees vs. Savitt Gems Negro League Broadside
Starting Bid - $300.00, Sold For - $402.50
Negro League broadside (21.5 x 27.5 inches) used to advertise a doubleheader between the New York Black Yankees and Savitt Gems, which took place at Bulkeley Stadium in Hartford, CT, on Sept 17th, circa 1945. Bulkeley Stadium was the home field for the Hartford Gems, led by manager "Jigger" Farrell. Local jeweler and Hartford booster Bill Savitt was the team's owner, and their "perennial foes" were the New York Black Yankees. The broadside is worn, but still very presentable, with some creasing, a chip in the right border, and a number of nail holes which appear to date from its original display. A simple yet powerful broadside, advertising a long-forgotten rivalry from the final years of greatness of the Negro Leagues. Good to Very Good condition. Framed to dimensions of 23.25 x 29 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $600/$800. SOLD FOR $402.50
