Circa 1929 Willie Wells Photo Card
Starting Bid - $1,000.00, Sold For - $2,070.00
Extremely rare photo card (origin unknown), circa 1929, features Negro League all-star and Baseball Hall of Famer Willie Wells. There are very few (if any other) cards of Willie Wells dating from his playing career, making this extreme rarity a special prize for both Negro League and Hall of Fame collectors. At the time this card was issued, Wells was a young shortstop playing for the St. Louis Stars of the Negro League. Wells led the league in hitting in 1929, batting .400, and again in 1930, averaging .409. The card identifies Wells along the base as "W. Wells" and also gives his position ("Short Stop") in white lettering. Very similar in design to a high quality real-photo postcard, with flawless contrast, measuring postcard dimensions (3.5 x 5.5 inches), with blank back. There is a single very fine vertical crease at the top, mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy, and a slight remnant of scrapbook paper on the reverse, otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. Originally purchased by our consignor in a 1997 hobby auction, where at that time it realized $3,700. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $2,070.00
