1887 Kalamazoo Bats Detroit BBC Team Card
Starting Bid - $2,500.00, Sold For - $11,500.00
Crisp, gem Kalamazoo Bat team card of the Detroit BBC. The Detroit Wolverines were the Champions of the National League in 1887, led by sluggers Dan Brouthers and Sam Thompson (who led the league in batting as well with a .372 average). Incredibly bold photo, with perfect contrast. Detroit is particularly rare among the six teams in the set. The offered card is the Copeland example (Lot #806 in the Copeland catalog). In the 1991 Copeland auction, this card sold for $8,250. The card has not seen the light of day since, and has been consigned to this auction directly by the purchaser at the landmark sale. Graded in the Copeland sale as Nr/Mt-Mt. Stricter grading standards of today might take into account an ever so slight diamond cut (which is not uncommon with cards from this era in general), thus we assign it a slightly more conservative grade of Near Mint. Harshly graded EX 60 by SGC. This is an extraordinary example of this great rarity, with a very significant hobby provenance. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $11,500.00
